The Exact Way That I Manage My Home As Mom With ADHD
Not too long ago, I was completely overwhelmed in managing the small details of my everyday life as a mom with ADHD.
The little boring tasks like meal planning, cleaning the house, keeping up with the activities, remembering to send in the forms for school...
It wasn't one big thing but more like a death by a million papercuts and these daily things all added up to one stressed out, tired, and defeated mom.
It was embarrassing.
And even worse was how it impacted my kids.
Stressed out me looks a lot like cranky me. And cranky me is not a nice mommy or wife or friend or daughter.
Cranky me just kind of wanted to hide in my bed and ignore the dishes in the sink and the challenging behaviors my kids were dealing with and all of the other boring and mundane things on my plate.
Cranky me is not the mom I wanted to be and I knew that I needed to find a way to manage my home and family in a way that worked for my ADHD brain.
I read so many books on ADHD, parenting, systems, habits, and discipline and yet NOTHING talked about the challenges of being a mom with ADHD and raising ADHD kids.
No one was talking about how painfully boring the daily monotonous tasks of adulting and home management are for those of us with ADHD.
If anything, all of the ADHD parenting books were adding more to the pile of things to do with complicated reward systems and screen time rules and therapies to try and dietary changes.
I knew that I needed to create systems that took in to consideration the needs of my ADHD and the big needs of my kids.
And having tried everything else, I knew that I needed to create something unique if I was going to end my cranky mom era.
Here is exactly what I did:
- I read everything about ADHD that I could get my hands on and listened to every podcast I could find about ADHD, behavior change and systems.
- I threw every Neurotypical organization, time management and cleaning routine out of the window and started from scratch based on what I learned about ADHD brains.
- I pulled back from a lot of things (entertaining, kids sports, travel, and even my business) to focus on getting a handle of our home life.
- I created hundreds of visuals and put them to work for my family, tweaking over time and seeing what actually worked well over the long haul.
- I simplified my routine BIG time and started with a few strategic tasks.
- I then started adding in a weekly and monthly task rotation and tweaked that for awhile as well until it felt like my home was clean and tidy on a regular basis.
- I consistently prioritized sleep, exercise, creativity and down time.
- I continued to create systems and automation around things like meal planning, holidays, grocery shopping and so much more so that I have fewer decisions to make on a daily basis.
- I went to therapy and learned how to manage my emotions and regulate my nervous system.
And here is what happened:
- I've learned to manage my ADHD so that my energy is much more consistent and I rarely hit ADHD burnout.
- I've learned to manage my home in a realistic way even on days my energy is low.
- I no longer have the ongoing anxiety that comes with feeling like I'm about to drop or let someone down.
- My home feels clean, tidy and peaceful (NOT PERFECT!) on a consistent basis.
- I'm able to help my kids manage their big emotions and their ADHD deficits from a place of grace and understanding.
- I've been able to maintain these systems for the last two years and made huge strides towards my big ideas and business goals.
- I've learned to manage my time and am no longer overcommitting or overextending myself. Our family is no longer living at a frantic pace and I can so no easily without massive guilt.
- I've been able to add back things like entertaining, sports for the kids, and family travel because I now have the capacity to do so without additional stress.
- I've created a system so that others can create this change for their families and a one of a kind community to help others live it out.
- I break it all down step by step in Master the Mundane so that you can take small, actionable steps that end up being pretty revolutionary.
You don't have to figure it out all by yourself.
I've paved the way so that you can take what I've learned and created and make it completely yours.
And have the ongoing encouragement, support and friendship of others just you like along the way.
